Storing your Dahlias

If you have tuberous Dahlias and you want to save them, you'll need to dig them up and store them. Wait until the first frost when the foliage has died back. Let them sit 1 - 2 days before digging them up. Clean off any excess soil from the tubers and store in peat moss or straw in a cool place. The trick is not to let them get too dry or too wet before you're ready to plant again next year. Your can start them inside in April the following year and them move outside when danger of hard frost is past, usually mid-May here in zone 6.

If you are starting them outside in the spring, wait until mid-May.
